Hey Yasi - I just upgraded wordpress on my blog and finally configured Akismet to filter out thousands of spam comments. Once that was done, a few blog comments shined through and I noticed yours sitting there (sorry I'm just finding it now).
I figured out how to remove those spin bike pedals at Gold's. It just requires sitting in the saddle with your feet strapped into the pedals, then twisting the pedals off the cranks. If I don't see you, good luck at the NJ State Triathlon! And congrats on getting into the NYC marathon this year.

Barry, thanks for the comment. That sounds just like something sensei would do.
Since you trained in the 70s and 80s, we probably know some of the same people.
Do you still do any type of training?

I remember Winter Training in the late '70's to early '80's. As I recall, the training was held during the first week in February...historically the coldest days of the year. During one early morning training, one of my fellow black belts held his gi top closed with a safety pin. This angered Kisaka Sensei to the point where he had all of the black belts remove their gi tops and as we went out of the door, he threw water on our upper bodies...however, with the hard training that we did prior to the run, we didn't feel the cold. Our bodies were generating so much heat, it didn't feel any different. However, it was a badge of honor.

The only injuries from winter training was some cuts on our feet from the rock salt that was sprinkled on the sidewalk snow. The rock salt was like running on ground glass. Those were wonderful days. That type of training taught us to push our boundaries and not accept limits. Those were some of the best lessons that I had ever learned. Thank you Sensei Kisaka.

I have the SAME problem with my cycling shoes and those bikes! Before the new year there were always at least 3 bikes in there that didn't have the foot strap, but I think they went through all the bikes and 'fixed' them, 'cleaned' them, and put all the straps back on. I tried asking an instructor how to take them off but she wouldn't tell me. I'm going to ask another one soon because I'm sick of using my sneakers. Once I know I'll pass along the info!

Frank, I ran across your page while conducting a google search for Katsuya Kisaka. I trained religiously at the JKA of NJ back in the early-mid 90's. Regrettably, I moved from Trenton to California in 96. I left the JKA dojo as a 1 or 2 kyu brown belt. It's been so long I cant remember exactly. I moved to a city where Shotokan was nowhere to be found, so I never continued my training. I have always missed it and the instructional staff at JKA. When I attended, aside from Kisaka Sensei, I was often insructed by Irwin Nadel (Not 100% on the spelling), Mr. Galdo (I think his first name was Frank, he had 3 sons), and Mary Jarosz. Are they still there? Mr. Nadel used to tell me if I ever quit he would hunt me down :) . I would love to know how everyone is doing down there.
